Class and Group Programmes for Term 1 2018

We have stitching and sewing groups that meet fortnightly. They are time to stitch along with other like-minded sewers. Some groups have a theme while others are general.

On every second Wednesday and Friday we have technique Classes. These are designed for you to lern a new skill or fine tune an existing one.

Remember we are asking that you work on fabrics predominantly purchased at Patchwork Passion.

Please refer to the end of this Programme for our other Class Policies.

Japanese Sashiko, Kogin and Boro Classes with Jane MacDonald

Jane MacDonald has been making quilts and teaching in her sunny studio on the North Coast of NSW and has become a recognised name in Australian textiles and craft, with a huge focus on all things Japanese. Jane now teaches and exhibits with BeBe Bold at craft and quilt exhibitions throughout Australia including the Australian Quilt Convention in Melbourne and has recently taught sashiko and Kogin techniques in France and the UK. We are thrilled to have her join us in April. Please note that these classes will be held at the Onehunga Community Centre which is next to the library in Church Street, off the bottom of Onehunga Mall. NOT in our usual venue up closer to the shop.

Kogin Zip Purse

Kogin is a traditional Japanese hand stitching technique originating from the Honshu Province in Northern Japan. Kogin patterns are generally formed with straight stitches on an evenweave fabric. A kit will be provided for this class but you will have a choice of thread colour. Join Jane to make purse on Thursday 26 April from 9.00am – 4.00pm. Cost: $145.00 including the kit for the purse

Cherry Blossom Hitomezashi

This is a variation on the traditional Japanese sashiko stitching. It is a one stitch and the stitches do touch whereas they don’t normally in sashiko. The finished size of this pieces is 13½” (34cm) square so would make up into a great cushion, bag or table mat. Join Jane in Friday 27 April from 9.00am – 4.00pm. Cost: $130.00 including the pre-printed fabric for stitching

 Japanese Boro Runner

Create a Runner for a table, bed or the wall using the very popular technique of Boro. Boro started as a mending technique so was traditionally made from scraps all stitched together and patched up. It has had a big ‘renaissance’ recently with it now being used by contemporary brands in various products. We have packs of 7” squares available to support this project so you can easily get a big variety of fabrics. Make your own runner with Jane on Saturday 28 April from 9.00am – 4.00pm. Cost: $110.00

Important Class Information

Our programme is made up of Social Groups, Themed Groups, and Classes teaching a particular technique or project.

Groups will vary in duration – some will be fortnightly for each school term, some six monthly and others a variety such us fortnightly for four sessions to work on a particular project. Some will require stitching to be done between classes.

Go to the website to see photos of most of the projects or better still pop into the shop to see them. Quilts always look so much better in real-life than in any photograph.

We do expect you to be working predominantly on our fabrics at our classes and groups.

Please make sure that you have purchased all your class needs prior to the day of the class. If you need help with fabric selection we would love to assist. We recommend that your cotton fabrics are washed before class to check for shrinkage and colour fastness.

We only confirm bookings with payment of the class fee. Once you have paid your class fee we will give you a needs list for the class or group. We cannot offer refunds on classes once the class has been confirmed as going ahead.

Watch our website and our weekly email Newsflash for additions to our Class Programme as new classes will be added as they are developed.

To make our groups function well we expect you to:

  • arrive on time for all groups and classes
  • let us know if you are unable to make a session at least the day before
  • turn off your cell phones or put them on silent mode
  • work on projects suitable to the set theme when there is one
